Alex Rasmussen

Cutting-edge CEO with expertise in data management, data analytics, and software engineering

Alex Rasmussen is an accomplished software engineer, executive, advisor, and thought leader with more than 14 years of success in the software industry. His broad areas of expertise include data management, data analytics, software engineering, and strategy.

Alex is the CEO of Bits on Disk, where he provides data engineering and infrastructure consulting and contracting. He has also served as the VP of Engineering for Freenome, a biotechnology company focusing on applying machine learning to early-stage cancer detection. At Freenome, he provided architectural direction, code review, mentorship, and roadmap/feature planning for Freenome's LIMS, bioinformatics, and machine learning systems.

Prior to his role at Freenome, Alex was a Principal Software Engineer and early employee at Trifacta, the global leader in self-service data preparation. While there, Alex wrote significant chunks of Trifacta Wrangler's batch execution system. Alex also led the development of its first few cloud-based offerings and helped build the infrastructure behind what became Google Cloud Dataprep, which is currently offered as part of Google Cloud Platform.

Alex holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of California San Diego and a BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. As part of his Ph.D. work at UCSD, Alex and his coauthors wrote TritonSort, a large-scale sorting system (later extended to support MapReduce) that set or held at least one world record for large-scale sorting every year between 2011 to 2016.

Alex has written, debugged, and tested large backend software systems written in Python, Java, C++, and node.js. He has deployed software into AWS, Google Cloud Platform, and on-premises colocation facilities, and developed systems that run in both containerized and non-containerized environments (including a few systems deployed on Kubernetes).
