Caryn was interviewed by AdvisoryCloud on 06/28/2019 as part of our Featured Advisor Interview series.

AC - Tell us more about your main areas of expertise for being an advisor? 

CM - My expertise lies in executive coaching and strategic plan development for entrepreneurs and small business owners.  As a strategic advisor and coach, I support businesses and executives to hone in on their business and personal development goals and deliver an actionable road map to success. I specialize in helping businesses connect the dots between their growth objectives and actions to yield specific and tangible outcomes.

I also have a specific skill set in analyzing digital marketing strategy and tactics, along with a  strong background in supporting small niche businesses and law firms.

AC - Describe your main motivation for being an advisor? 

CM - I joined the advisor team to lend my talents as a business strategy protagonist.  It is my passion to help executives and entrepreneurs become unstuck, shift mindset and adopts the behaviors needed to build and realized their own success. 

In 20 years of business marketing and coaching, I have worked with hundreds of business owners and executives. I am consistently impressed and inspired by the extraordinary creativity, ambition, and grit required to run your own enterprise.  These are true risk-takers and dreamers and their efforts help to shape and redefine a total economy of 28.7 million firms that are small businesses. I have an acute understanding of the challenges they face and the skill required to co-create their pathway to a prosperous business.

AC - Elaborate on the types of situations, challenges or decisions, you feel you could add the most value to as an advisor? 

CM - When a business hits a plateau in their business growth or a crossroads in the direction of their business, my coaching work provides the firm a platform and focused attention to regroup and do an analysis of the current challenges, fundamental strengths and desired outcomes. I am able to listen to what is being said and more importantly identify what is not being said.  Coaching clients to sift through the volume of concerns and ultimately co-create the plan to success. 

When Executives are challenged in their career development or conflict resolution and need a qualified independent sounding board to co-create or advocate for them to navigate effectively to their next desired objective or resolution. I recently crafted a plan to help a business owner evolve from a single store owner to the CEO of her business.  In 6 months of work, I was the protagonist for her to develop a laser focus on core priorities and entrusting her well-trained staff to keep the business producing while she focused on the growth strategy of her brand.  

AC - Do you see any disruptive trends on the horizon in your industry or position? 

CM - The Executive Coaching field has grown exponentially over the past two decades.  It was once thought of as sort of a boutique, luxury resource. However, the evidence of the effectiveness of coaching has borne out.  Business large and small recognizes the value and intact many large corporations now are developing internal coaching departments to assist in creating cohesion throughout large business organizations.  Helping individuals to have a clarified and intentional mindset yields improvement in professional and personal productivity and happiness, thus increasing retention and commitment. In ten years, I fully anticipate coaching services to be as intrinsic to success as accountants and tax planners.

AC - Tell me about the most impactful project or decision you’ve been involved in as an executive. 

CM - I served on the board of a non-profit in my local community.  This non-profit was a small cultural museum that was at a crossroads, and one month after I was asked to join the board, we were faced with the choice to either close the museum doors or come up with a save the museum plan.  Half the board resigned, including many of the executive members. Needless to say, the prospects looked bleak. There was a team of 8 board members who stayed, and somehow, I was nominated to lead the board. We embarked on a 3 year Strategic Plan under my guidance that included radical changes in mindset, an approach which expanded our vision of what we could achieve.  The process was not easy, nor comfortable and we faced quite a few hurdles along the way. 5 years later this museum has not only been saved financially but has experienced exponential growth both in offerings and revenue, Today the organization is halfway through its next capital campaign for further expansion.  

This experience impacted me the most because it validated two integral concepts.

  • First, that all meaningful endeavors begin with a well crafted strategic vision and plan.
  • Second, a well-crafted plan co-created by key stakeholders will always yield more than imagined.  When mindset and planning are aligned, investment levels increase, we shed the clutter that can distract us and our goals and aims are realized.
